Useful Words and Phrases
Be careful, if hiking in the mountains (it
isn't a walk in the park). Every year rescue
teams have to search for people who get lost
or become exhausted. Hiking maps available
include the times needed between various
spots when hiking as well as some of the
distances. Note that the weather on Yakushima
is very changeable and although it may be
fine and warm at sea level, it can be quite
a different story in the ranges.
Hiking through the mountains is slow and
one and a half kilometres per hour may be
the fastest you can move at times, so plan
on taking a lot of time.
It is necessary to file a 'tozan todoke'
登山届 (hiking intention form) so that in
the event of your not returning at the designated
time, the police will know where to look
for you. Forms are available at the port,
the airport, the town offices and on the
ferry coming to Yakushima.
Mountain guides, including some who speak
English, are available.
