The vestiges of a sea way

About the shipowner of the Kaseda Bansei, and the marine transportation business of Hyuga Mimitsu.

A shipowner's warehouse (Kaseda Bansei) I have been to a port town called Mimitsu (Hyuga-shi) of Miyazaki Prefecture.

The town is a beautiful town of a scene where the same old rows of houses as Chiran or Izumi. Ancient times to this town took down wood and charcoal from the villages of the Kyushu mountain country on the raft, and has sent them to Osaka etc. by Sengoku ship from here.

Mimitsu is the calm rows of houses with the well which the white wall of a shipping agency built at the Edo period, the vacant lot for fire prevention, and the roof required. We can reach this town in Hyuga-shi in about 5 hours after Kaseda using a highway. And this harbor connected with Kagoshima once also on the sea way.

Now, some merchant's families which made shipping the background also in Kaseda are in a Bansei. The Marutyou, the Kaneshichi, etc. were carrying the miscellaneous goods for days, and food to Osaka or Ryukyu from the Edo period. In this way, it is that Osaki of a Bansei came to prosper with a lighter from the second half of Edo. The mouth of a river of a Manose river was situated in an Aihoshi (western part of a Bansei) from the first. However, the mouth of a river changed to the eastern part of a Bansei in which this river causes a flood and Osaki has it at the time. And I became the present flow which flows the bottom of a sunset bridge.

In South Satsuma, Ibusuki and a Yamagawa are known as a town of marine transportation business. Furthermore, also from Shioya and Matsugaura in Chiran, or the Kadonoura, people applied many days, and I was going to Osaka with the transport ship. And Mimitsu had also become one of the ports of call.

I am talking with people of Mimitsu and there are the following interesting talks. They know what the ship was running along from there to Osaka. However, they do not know having become the port of call where this town is important for the ship of Kagoshima. I thought then that a sea way was not one-way traffic.

On the Yaku island, when the name of Kaseda is learned, there are those who remember a Tyoshiya (Marutyou). Mimitsu and a Bansei are said that marine business declined by development of transportation by land. However, we also want to leave that those towns let the sea way pass once, and there was a flow of a man, a thing, and culture to memory.

In the Shinkawa community of a Manose river mouth of a river, people pray for marine safety and will have a god of water festival in lunar-calendar June. And Garappa sumo wrestling is dedicated then.
